The Tasmanian Transport Museum is located just 8 km from the Hobart CBD and can be reached easily by car (via the Brooker Hwy) or the Metro Tasmania bus services that go to or pass through Glenorchy.
On selected Sundays the museum operates train rides to Berriedale (30 minutes return) or 15 minute return heritage bus rides. Visit the website for information on our ride offerings.
The Museum houses many examples of road and rail transport including Tram 141, which was the first item to be saved in 1960 for a future Museum. Two of Hobart's electric Trolley Buses and the only double-decker tram to survive from the late 1940s also form part of the museum collection.
Amongst the railway collection is the oldest carriage to operate in Tasmania (AB1 - built in the UK in 1869). The first Main Line diesel-electric locomotive (X1) to operate in Australia and the last built English Electric locomotive ZA6. A number of Steam locomotives are also on display.
A large model railway is on display in the Road Transport Building and on train running days the Tasmania Fire Museum opens their display to museum visitors.

Our visit to the Tasmanian Transport Museum was absolutely fantastic!
We even got to ride on the train pulled by a diesel engine — which really took me right back to when I was a young girl. Such a nostalgic and special experience. 🚂
The museum is filled with incredible old-style vehicles and so much fascinating history to explore. There’s clearly a lot of care and pride in preserving these pieces of Tasmania’s past.
Well worth a visit — highly recommend!

An interesting transport museum about 30 minutes ride from Hobart city.
It was a nice easy ride on the intercity way and the museum was right on the trail so it was perfect.
The museum only open on Sunday and have a special train ride on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month which we missed. They also only open the fire engine room on those Sunday!
The entrance ticket ($16 per person) includes the old bus ride which was nice!
The museum run by volunteers and has many interesting stories to tell!
I love the train models they have and the weired rat town 😂

An unexpected treasure of a museum. Was able to wander through the tram, bus, fire truck and train sheds. Included in the ticket price was the train or bus ride depending on the weekend. Very enjoyable trip.

What a great way to spend a lazy Sunday looking through the historic Tasmanian Transport Museum at Glenorchy. I took my kids aged 5 & 7 and they had a ball. Plenty of old fire engines, old trams, buses, & an arrange of different trains. You can also walk in them all & explore their history. My kids loved making out they were driving them steering and walking up stairs to the top deck was their fav. The toilets are very clean and spacious. The staff are very friendly. The main passenger train runs all day up-and-down up-and-down, we went on around 4-5 times. Yes it’s not that long but it’s still great. The museum has a lot of history for the oldies & all the train lovers. And finally, the best thing is the price in this day and age. It’s surprisingly still very cheap to get through the gate. $6 for the kids & $11 for a adult concession $12 for none concession, you Can’t beat that. 10/10 Thanks Guys we will be back
