Set near one of Australia's most fascinating areas – the Pinnacles Desert where thousands of huge limestone pillars rise from the shifting yellow sands – the Pinnacles Desert Discovery takes you on a new dimension on your journey through Nambung National Park.
The park has beautiful beaches, coastal dune systems, shady groves of tuart trees and low heathlands of plants that produce vibrantly coloured flowers between August and October.
The centre is a stepping stone into the park with a track for walkers and an interpretive centre that encourages you to use all your senses to identify the hidden wonders and signs of life in the desert.
Designed by John Nichols, project architect for Woodhead International, who also designed the award winning Karijini Visitors Centre, the Pinnacles Desert Discovery has been designed in response to the landscape and has a strong relationship with the site that facilitates a sense of place to those who visit it.
My very first visit here and as west Aussie I am ashamed that I didn’t come earlier. The visitor centre is amazing plenty of history you can read in air conditioned comfort, a gift shop is a must stop before you go. Easily accessible for all, toilets are at the start of the walk way. Plenty of places to sit and rest, the walkway is well maintained and the DPW have done an amazing job. The staff are all knowledgeable and always willing to help.
We came at a such perfect time 3pm. We did the walk then We drove in and parked our car where it was quite and had a casual romantic picnic on the back of our ute till sunset. It was beautiful. Some say its just a bunch of rocks but being there feels different and more blessed to have experienced it.
The Pinnacles Desert in WA is one very interesting visit. It’s very raw, rugged, and unlike anywhere else. The drive from Perth had so many different types of bush it was amazing. From thick wooded forests to 1000’s of black boy grass trees ( Xanthorrhoea ) I had to Google it!! The drive was great. But standing out there amongst thousands of limestone pillars rising from the sand feels like you’ve landed on another planet. It’s a proper experience with wide open spaces, tough country, and natural beauty that really hits home of how different Australia is in each state. The drive through the park is easy enough, no 4wd required, but getting out and walking amongst the Pinnacles is where you really appreciate the scale of it all. The sheer uniqueness of the place make it unforgettable. It’s a reminder of how wild and diverse Western Australia really is. If you enjoy no-frills adventure, epic scenery, and seeing some of the hardest, most unique landscapes Australia has to offer, the Pinnacles is an absolute must-see. There is no food or coffee at the information centre but they did have ice creams and water along with lots of souvenirs. No close towns so come prepared with your own food and refreshments.
This was an interesting part of nature to explore. The drive up from Perth was scenic and arriving here early morning before the crowds was definitely my preferred. We did the drive through first then did the walk. Definitely do both as you get to see way more that way. Could get hot in summer though. We did it in a campervan so the drive is pretty much suitable for all cars. Look out for the pest goats. They like the high bushy areas.
Didnt expect to be wow by Pinnacles but my family and I love it. Not too far from Perth. Driving thru and hoping off for some quick photos....is really easy with kids. Love and awe by this place and highly recommend it.
