Home to the magical little penguins and the majestic southern right whale, this island is characterised by huge granite boulders tinged with orange lichen.
Take a short stroll or horse tram ride over the wooden causeway that connects the mainland at Victor Harbor to Granite Island Recreation Park.
The island is characterised by huge granite boulders tinged with orange lichen, with the sound of waves crashing against rocky shores a stirring soundtrack to your visit.
Enjoy the coastal scenery and discover the island's interesting history along the Kaiki Walk or go fishing from the jetty, or causeway (no fishing from breakwater). You may even spot a southern right whale between June and October.
Second time we have visited Granit Island and it’s an even better experience than last time. So much has been done to preserve the island and enhance the tourists experience. Highly recommend ⛰️🐬

Beautiful place! The Rocks, the rock formations, the interesting dead trees, the lookouts, the waves, the turquoise water - they made the hike much more interesting and guaranteed you'll have a lot of instagrammable photos!

We absolutely loved our visit to Granite Island! It’s such a beautiful and unique place with stunning coastal views all the way around. The walk across the causeway is really special, especially if you’re lucky enough to see the horse-drawn tram in action — it adds so much charm.
The island’s walking trail is easy to follow and offers amazing scenery — dramatic cliffs, interesting rock formations, and plenty of spots to stop and take photos. We enjoyed watching the waves crash against the rocks and even spotted some seals swimming nearby!
It’s also great to know that Granite Island is home to a little penguin colony — even though they’re shy during the day, it’s lovely to see how much care goes into protecting them.
The facilities are basic but good, with a café and information signs along the track. I’d recommend wearing comfy shoes and bringing a jacket — it can get windy!
Granite Island is a must-visit if you’re in Victor Harbor — a perfect mix of nature, wildlife, and local history. We can’t wait to come back!

This is a peaceful escape with stunning views and unique rock formations. The silence of the rocks feels like a reminder that life can be peaceful if we find peace within ourselves. I loved looking through the gaps between the rocks, almost like having a window to the sky and ocean, all blending into the most beautiful shade of blue.
The walk around the island is only about 2.9km, taking you on a scenic loop with breathtaking views and plenty of relaxing spots. This is easier than other trails, making it perfect for a casual stroll.
Highly recommended for those who enjoy walking/hiking. There’s still some up & down, but it’s an easy & relaxed one.
