The Highlander to Strathalbyn operates on most Sunday's (refer to website) of the month between May and November.
A short journey on behind a heritage steam or diesel locomotive from Mt Barker to Strathalbyn and return.
The journey commences from Mount Barker station - a pleasant 30 minute drive from Adelaide along the South Eastern Freeway. Regular bus services from Currie Street (CBD) to Mount Barker are available.
Leaving Mt Barker mid morning, the train first climbs up to the crest of the line and then winds down the eastern escarpment of the southern Mt Lofty Ranges, passing through several long abandoned station sites which bear testimony to the importance of this branch line a century ago.
Crossing the Angas River you then enter the historic township of Strathalbyn where many Scottish migrants settled in the early 1800s, influencing the early architecture which is still evident today. The town is well worth a visit to explore its well stocked antique shops, cafes and museums.
You have the option to return to Mt Barker after a short break to turn the locomotive, or opt to explore the township of Strathalbyn and return on the afternoon train.

My adult son and I went to the Highlander for dinner. It was great. Even though our meals got a little mixed up with a table next to us, it was still great food, still great service, and we would definitely go back again. It was fantastic to see they had a salad bar too, so many venues have taken these away. Great night indeed.

We recently stayed here for three nights. I had seen some reviews prior and was somewhat worried. However, the staff were friendly, the food was fantastic and the room was comfortable, albeit slightly outdated looking but still comfortable. The value for money was fabulous. People complained on other reviews about the road noise, but if you do your research, you will see it is located on a busy main road. To be honest, it isn't overly noisy during the night. The housekeeping does an awesome job too. We came back to our room after a day out to a beautifully clean and neat room. My only gripe is the other guest smoking outside the rooms would allow cigarette smell to waft into our room. Other then that it is a great place to stay and is pretty centrally located. So thanks to the staff at The Highlander for making our stay in S.A. comfortable and enjoyable.

Visited the Highlander for a meal tonight, for the first time. I ordered the Pork Belly, while my friend ordered a steak. Although the steak was a little fatty, it was cooked beautifully and the Pork Belly; all I can say is WOW! That was by far the BEST Pork Belly I have EVER had!! It was absolutely divine! It was so tender and the flavours with the apple slaw and mashed potato topped it off to pure perfection. The only reason for the 4 star and not 5 was because we were seated at a high table, which wasn't all that comfortable. Will 100% visit again though!

Not the biggest fan of the new menu. Wasn’t on their website that they had changed so we were shocked when we arrived. Not a single salad as an option. My entree came out after all the mains had been served. It was the chilli herb squid but had absolutely no chilli at all and the aioli was also missing. The kids meals are very expensive and come with no drink or ice cream option.
Overall was a let down.

The Highlander Adelaide is a nice facility and overall a good place to visit. However, the service experience could be improved.
Even when the venue is busy, staff should remain patient, calm and professional with customers. Some team members may benefit from training on customer handling, communication and maintaining a neutral, respectful facial expression during service.
Customers understand that busy periods can be stressful, but visible irritation or impatience can negatively affect the overall experience. Professional service is just as important as the quality of the facility itself.
