Bombala Platypus Reserve

Due to the high numbers of platypus found in their pristine rivers and streams, the Bombala region is known as Platypus Country. The Platypus Reserve is located 4.2 kilometres from Bombala on the Delegate Road and is ideal for seeing a platypus. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to see them. Look for a V shape in the water.
The raised platform makes viewing easy for all age groups. Platypus can stay underwater for up to 14 minutes, but more commonly, they will only remain under for between 60 to 90 seconds, so be patient and quiet when viewing this national treasure.
The on-site information boards provide you with comprehensive details about the platypus, and the newly installed walkways will make your exploring more enjoyable.
The reserve is a great spot to sit and enjoy lunch or simply soak up the peace and quiet. Picnic tables are provided, and there are two bird hides to allow you to really experience the birdlife.

Come at dawn or dusk and settle quietly and wait. Bring binoculars if you can because they settle just on or under the water. We went at dusk and got to see a platypus in the wild. A first for me. Beautiful elusive creatures, wild and free!

Lovely to see platypus in the wild! Get in early and be prepared to wait in quiet for a bit - totally worth it when they pop up next to the river bank in front of you! They start foraging at dawn and dusk and move up and down the river, so you really need to set yourself up and then wait. They only pop up for a little bit at a time and can be hard to zero in on. Highly recommend a pair of good low light binoculars so you can see the detail in their silly little faces! We rocked up at 4pm and had some great sightings around 4.30pm before the moved further away and were harder to see.

Got the tail of a platypus very hot but worth a look.. partner got a whole view go there if you get the chance and go early morning or late afternoon but be very quiet if you see one

Unfortunately we didn't see any platypuses, as we were there at completely the wrong time of day, but it was a beautiful spot nonetheless.

An easy and short drive off the highway to an amazing place. Take your lunch brake or go there for a late afternoon rest… and you might just spot a Platypus 😉
