Surf Camp Australia

I had a great week at Surfcamp Australia. It was so much fun and the instructors explain everything clearly and make you feel comfortable in the water, even if you’ve never surfed before. A special shoutout to Tommy, he’s a great instructor, super patient, always in a good mood and genuinely funny. Considering that you get five days of accommodation, food, and daily surf lessons, it’s definitely great value for money. I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to surf and have a fun week with a good group of people.

I LOVED my time at Surf Camp! The staff was welcoming, funny, and encouraged us to disconnect from our phones so that we could be in the moment and focus on enjoying our time at camp (it truly felt like being a kid at summer camp, in the best possible way). As a new surfer, I felt supported by everyone in my group and by my instructors. The entire staff was great, with a special shoutout going to my surf instructors Ronin and Karston. Ronin brought a contagious energy and was proactive in looking for people to help. Even out of our large group, he noticed where I was struggling and offered lots of tips and support to help me improve. Karston was so kind and was always hyping up me and the other members of my group. He remembered little things about the people in our group to build connections, and had such a depth of knowledge to be able to answer any question you could think of. Also, as someone with a gluten allergy, the staff was very accommodating. They triple-checked who had dietary restrictions, and I was able to eat safely (and a lot!) without my dietary restriction feeling like an inconvenience. Be advised that the rooms don't have a/c and only have a small fan, so it was pretty hot at night when we were trying to sleep (I went to camp during the summer, so go figure). Overall I had a lovely time, met lots of cool people, and now feel confident to continue my surf adventures wherever I go next!

Everything about this place is special. The staff really make this such an incredible experience. From the volunteers in the kitchen (Eve!), to the media team. Everyone adds to the good vibes and high morale in camp. The instructors are all amazing, they all want to help, and are able to give one-to-one tips and advice every single session (multiple times a session, actually). They make a huge effort to get to know everyone. Josh is extremely supportive, always cheering you on, believing in you. But every instructor brings their own great energy, advice, and guidance. Max and Carson have such a fun dynamic. Ricky is super helpful, Maddie is super fun and enthusiastic, Mat is very positive and cheery. I honestly can’t fault anyone or anything at this camp. They all create an incredible, fun atmosphere where it’s easy to make friends, relax, and have a great time. I miss it already and will definitely be back. I recommend it to everyone!

I’d like to start with a quick heads-up: the website says the camp is for beginners and intermediates and for all ages, but in reality it’s mainly for beginners, and the average age is probably around 20–24. This camp is not really suited for intermediate surfers who want to progress. The positives: - Great atmosphere at the camp. The staff is always positive, friendly, and really tries to create a good vibe while being attentive to guests - The surf spot is great! A lot of space to surf - The camp itself is clean and well organised - The surf theory class was interesting (although it’s a bit of a shame it only takes place at the end of the camp) - The staff reorganised the Sunday schedule after cancelling a surf session on Saturday because of a storm, which was appreciated The negatives: - This camp is really for beginners only: 1. There are only big beginner boards available (size 8 or 9), with no other options 2. The staff does try to separate groups by level, but beginners are still sometimes included in the most experienced group. As a result, time is spent reviewing safety basics and how to take off instead of surfing 3. The coaches therefore spend most of their time with the beginners in the group - Because of that, I didn’t receive any feedback or advice during the surf sessions, which isn’t great if you want to improve - The surf coaches often seemed to be chatting among themselves rather than giving tips - The food defo lacks variety and quality (burgers with no hot vegetables, only apples as fruit, no dessert / frozen steak, ham, and margarine are really cheap and not healthy) - The WiFi is very poor (although in a way that helps you disconnect, so maybe that’s a blessing in disguise)
