The three main tour routes and optional side trips that make up the Aberfeldy Back Road Touring Routes are considered one of Victoria's best four wheel drive experiences.
This self-guided four wheel drive touring route combines rich history, spectacular mountain views and some of the Great Dividing Range's most scenic driving routes.
Travel through remote bushlands, across stone river crossings, past old gold mining settlements and see heritage sites and relics along the way. Interpretive signs explain the story of miners in search of their fortune.
Four wheel drive enthusiasts can immerse themselves in nature with side trips for walking, and lots of camping and fishing opportunities.
This tour is best done during the warmer months, when all the roads are open. If travelling in winter or spring, some sections of the tour will be seasonally closed
The main sections of the route are easy to medium, with some side trips graded up to very difficult. The total length is up to approximately 300 kilometres depending on the route you take. The routes can take between one to five days' driving depending on which routes you explore.
Visitors can choose to camp in Walhalla, Edwards Hill, Donnelly's Creek Recreation Ground, Matlock, Meringtons Campground, Junction Hut, Jorgenson Hut, Little O'Tooles Campground, O'Tooles Campground, Goonans Hut, Store Point Hut, Comet Flat, and Jack Scotts.
We went early and camped on the river itself. It's a beautiful spot for a bit of trout fishing, to sit in the river or go for a swim. On the second day every little corner of the campground filled up. People were throwing up tents on the river side and just leaving them to claim a spot. It became pretty unruly. It's worth a visit and a camp, however I wouldn't go back unless it's the middle of the week. It just gets too busy.
Such a beautiful place to camp. Less crowded and has two drop toilets. It also has plenty of spots all with fire pits. Water way is very close and there are places deep enough to take a swim. Water is Crystal clear and so clean. No place to dispose garbage , so must take all our garbage home.
we did our first camping in here and it was really cool and beautiful location close to river. you don't need a 4WD as few hatchbacks were there too. multiple spots available with fire pits and it's close if you are reaching from Thomson Dam side.
One of my favourite camping spots, isolated but at same time not far away from a sealed road, close to a high flowing river, nice BBQ spots, protected from wind. Been camping there 3 or 4 times, will come back! Just a safety tip: see the signs of limbs falling under the 2 widow maker trees? They are there for a reason!!
Aberfeldie Bridge is found deep in the Boorboor National Forest. A short walk from the bridge is a local camping ground with a handful of spaces. This beautiful and picturesque oasis in the bush is perfect for a weekend away. The nearby river is very clean and beautiful. The campground also includes a toilet I’ll be at rudimentary drop toilet.
