About

Looking at art used to be boring. It still is, maybe, but at least at Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, you can get drunk and/or rage against the machine.

Located just up the river from Hobart, Mona's subterranean architecture showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of David Walsh's private collection of art and antiquities, the largest private art collection of art in the southern hemisphere.

There's art and exhibitions but also live music, library, food, wine, beer, bars, restaurants, winery and cellar door, accommodation, recording studio, and a tennis court. Mona was designed to be explored—as a space of wonder and experiment—with The O, which you should totally download before you get here. Catch the ferry, too.

You could probably speed through the place in three or four hours, but they recommend you hang around—make a day of it.

Each June, Mona's Dark Mofo winter festival delves into centuries-old winter solstice rituals and celebrates the dark through art, music, food, film, light and noise.

When planning our trip to Hobart, MONA was definitely on our list of must see and experience attractions and it did not disappoint. The building is architectural interesting with many layers and exhibits. Easy to get lost looking at so many rooms and art, it feels like a labyrinth! We planned our visit for two hours and stayed for five! We took our time wandering from level to level not realising that there are external building and art to investigate and we rushed the last areas. We did take a half hour break and enjoyed some cafe food at the wine tasting bar. We were aware that MONA can be approached by water but chose to drive our hire car and found there was plenty of parking. The only complaint I have was walking through one of the tunnels where music was extremely loud and can see how it might trigger some people, so a warning should be at the entrance of the tunnel. Otherwise, our party of three thoroughly enjoyed MONA, especially the two levelled library and reading room with lots of famous people paraphernalia… ranging from David Bowie to Albert Einstein. Well worth our time and would love to go again!
