Sacred Heart Cathedral is one of Australia's largest churches and the second tallest after St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne.
It is an exceptionally large church for a provincial city cathedral in Australia and its construction was made possible chiefly through the estate of Henry Backhaus - 1811-1882, a German from Paderborn and the first Catholic priest on the Bendigo goldfields.
Backhaus was very skilled in financial matters and accumulated considerable property - not least through encouraging his gold-mining parishioners to contribute some of their findings to the work of the church. Backhaus left his wealth for the benefit of the church and enabled the cathedral, among other things, to be built.
Sacred Heart Cathedral is now the principal Church of the Diocese of Sandhurst and the home Church of the Cathedral Parish serving the people of central and north west parts of the city of Bendigo and many visitors to the church and the city.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo is absolutely stunning, with magnificent architecture. The exterior alone is impressive, but stepping inside is something else entirely - soaring ceilings, an ethereal glow, beautiful stained-glass, and an incredible sense of grandeur and history. Photos don't do it justice; you really have to experience it in person. A must-visit if you're in Bendigo and definitely worth going out of your way to see.

As soon as you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm welcome letter that shares the history and story of the church, setting a thoughtful and meaningful tone from the very beginning. The temple itself is absolutely stunning—every detail, from the architecture to the atmosphere, feels carefully preserved and deeply inspiring. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, take it all in, and truly appreciate its beauty and heritage.

Worth coming to see the architecture.
It's such a high quality building, which was apparently done in two stages. The bottom psrt of the cross was done first, the the T done later on. You can see this from the different colour columns. Clean toilet at the back of the building. The entry is on the side, behind the toilet (the furthest from the corner of the street)

The architecture of this cathedral is amazing. Entry is via the left-hand side of the building, and parking is available on the road. I believe it is a 1.5-hour parking zone.
There is a lot of history associated with the cathedral, and it is worth taking the time to read through it. Visitors are encouraged to make a donation, as I saw that the daily running cost is around $1,000, if I’m not mistaken.
If you are visiting Bendigo, this is a must-visit place.

Bendigo Cathedral is a truly beautiful place. I really adored the building — the architecture is stunning and very impressive. The details inside and outside are elegant and peaceful, making it a wonderful place to visit even if you’re not religious. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, and you can really feel the history and care that has gone into preserving it. It’s definitely one of Bendigo’s highlights and well worth a visit.
