Welcome to the National Library of Australia – the home of your story.
There is always something going on with a constantly changing calendar.
Wander through the Main Reading Room to view some of the building's artwork and look through a selection of books on display.
Or take advantage of one of their free guided tours. Trained volunteer guides are passionate about sharing their knowledge of the Library and its collections.
And don't forget to browse the Bookshop for a souvenir, a special gift or your next great read. Or, if you need to recharge with a drink and a bite to eat, you can also visit the Paperplate Cafe.

The only reason it gets four stars is because the parking is annoying and you need an app that isn’t used everywhere in Canberra. But the library itself - terrific! There is an earthly globe in there, giant, such as we see on old desks in studies, but do much bigger, and next to it, same size, a celestial globe, stunning. The stained windows in the cafe, the foyer, all gorgeous. The light. The space and peace and quiet in there is almost breathtaking. Lovely. As you enter, to your left are two display rooms and they’re incredible. Old photos, older books, in this case too, orchestral scores from Haydn etc, then on to a display of photos that were printed back in the day and the stories behind them. I bought the book, great souvenir. Yes, this is a definite visit, but the parking isn’t so much of a treat.

Lovely library with free entry, clean and comfortable spaces, and even a small free exhibition. Great vibe with plenty of seating for study or work. Only downside: parking is $4.20/hr (we paid $6.80), which felt a bit pricey. Overall, a great visit!

Remarkable calming exhibition. When you step inside the library’s ongoing exhibition you’ll feel a sense of peace and serenity, because it’s so empty and quiet! The library is well-sized and well-maintained. There’s several options for book, but not as quite diverse as the National Library in Sydney and Melbourne. The reading and working area are well lit from natural lighting and the space is maintained in a climate comfortable environment (not too hot and not too cold). There’s children activity corner at the front during the school holiday. The coffee shop in front has good coffee and a nice view. There’s also a large bag bagging area. When I came here in January 2025, the building was still in ongoing renovation on the outside, still good in the inside. Oh, and there’s free wifi as well!
