The Mawson's Huts Replica Museum stands on the waterfront in Hobart, near the wharf from which the SY Aurora sailed south to Antarctica with Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14 on board.
This world-class small museum gives visitors an historic insight into the daily lives of the AAE expeditioners who spent two winters living and working in the windiest place on Earth - the true home of the blizzard.
For two years, through two dark winters, the huts were home - a haven of warmth, light and companionship.
The Mawson's Huts Foundation's mission: the ongoing conservation of the unique historic buildings that were built as the base for Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14 at Cape Denison on Commonwealth Bay in January 1912. Assisted by enthusiastic volunteers and staff, profits from the Museum go towards the Foundation's efforts to conserve of the original huts in Antarctica.
They welcome special interest and school groups. Please call for a special group rate.

The photographs and stories are fascinating. To see artefacts from those explorers is a step back in time. The Staff member who is located inside the communal living area of the replica Mawson's Hut is so knowledgeable of all facets of their life. They have two pieces of Antarctica stone that you can touch and turn over in your hands. Well worth the visit.

This was a great representation of Mawsoms Hut. The staff and volunteer were knowledgeable and friendly. You pay a fee and get to read about the expeditions. You see the shelter where the dogs were housed, then see inside the hut where 18 men were living in close proximity to each other and conducting scientific research. The recreation was amazing with every detail tended to. Fascinating place to visit.

There's a wealth of information on Antarctica, stations, and Mawson's hut and two years there, plus details on all the crew. Some wonderful artefacts, such as an original sledge from the expedition, and the volunteer guide in the hut had so much knowledge to share. There were children there who enjoyed the experience by being given a treasure hunt to keep them busy while parents read the info boards and looked around. They all seemed to get a kick out of the experience.

One of the best things to do in Hobart is to visit Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum! It has the history of Mawson’s Expedition and all the hardships and challenges they were faced with and overcame despite the most hostile environment conditions. They are all exceptional individuals and heroes! The staff and volunteers were just so nice, informative and it was a pleasure for them to explain and bring to life the reality of their extraordinary work.

A must-visit for anyone interested in Australia’s exploration history.
This is a fantastic place to gain a deeper understanding of the courage and resilience of our early pioneers—especially Sir Douglas Mawson and his expedition team. The exhibits do an excellent job of telling the story of their challenges and achievements, bringing history to life in a way that’s both engaging and inspiring. A wonderful tribute to some of Australia’s greatest explorers.
